Summer Palace (夏宮) is the Michelin two-starred Chinese restaurant of the Island Shangri-La Hong Kong. Headed by Executive Chinese Chef, Chef Ip Chi Cheung, Summer Palace features authentic Cantonese dishes prepared using the freshest and finest ingredients.

The hotel being located in Admiralty, Hong Kong, Summer Palace is a popular venue for business lunches. During my visit on a weekday, the restaurant was fully booked so I highly recommend that guests make a prior reservation.

Marinated Black Fungus with Garlic and Peanut in Dark Vinegar

For appetizers, we sampled some items from the restaurant's a la carte menu. The first one to be served was the Marinated Black Fungus with Garlic and Peanut in Dark Vinegar. I like it that the vinegar removed most of the earthy taste of the mushrooms. I also loved the contrast of textures between the crunchy peanuts and the tender mushrooms.

The next appetizer served on our table was the Spicy Marinated Bean Curd Sheet with Garlic and Red Chili. This is my favorite between the two appetizers we sampled. The bean curd sheet were tender and very easy to the bite. The sauce was very flavorful and not too spicy at all. In fact, the red chilis had the perfect caramelization which brought out their natural sweetness.

Soup of the Day: Arrowroot & Pork Ribs Soup with Mixed Beans

Warming up our stomach was the Soup of the Day called Arrowroot & Pork Ribs Soup with Mixed Beans. This traditional Cantonese soup had a delicate taste and very a silky texture. Saltiness and sweetness were well balanced. The pork ribs were cooked perfectly in the broth that the meat fell off the bone and were very tender.

In addition to its a la carte menu, Summer Palace also has a separate dim sum menu which is only available during lunchtime. We sampled four items from the menu starting off with the Baked Barbecued Pork Bun. The flaky buns were baked to golden perfection. Inside are chunks of the famed barbecued pork of Summer Palace.

We then had the Steamed Diced Scallop Dumpling with Spicy Marinated Termite Mushroom. The scallops were very plump with all its flavors locked inside the dumpling. The termite mushroom added a light note of earthy flavor with a bit of a spicy punch in the end.

We did not let the chance pass without us trying two of Summer Palace's signature dim sums, and two of my favorite dim sums as well. The Steamed Pork Dumpling with Scallop and Shrimp (shumai or siomai) at Summer Palace was really something. First, the size of each shumai was huge, and it was packed with minced pork and shrimps. Secondly, the shumai was topped with a slice of scallop. I'm in love!

Steamed Fresh Shrimp Dumpling

The Steamed Fresh Shrimp Dumpling (har gow or ha kaw) is also one of my favorite dim sums and here at Summer Palace, each piece of the har gow is generously filled with plump shrimps. Their har gow goes well with the chili paste which they make in-house.

When we were about to end our lunch, we were suggested to try another dish from the a la carte menu. The Pan-fried Vermicelli with Prawn was amazing. The vermicelli was crispy despite being soaked in its rich sauce. The prawns on the other hand were plump and flavorful.

Finally for dessert, we had the Baked Sago Pudding with Lotus Seed Paste. It's an interesting twist to the classic sago pudding which was baked to have a golden crust. My mom on the other hand had the signature Chilled Sago Cream with Mango Juice and Pomelo.

How to Get There

Coming from the airport, take the Airport Express and alight at the Hong Kong Station. From there, you can take a taxi going to the hotel. If you are coming from Kowloon side, I don't recommend taking a taxi going to Hong Kong island. Instead, take the train and alight at the Admiralty Station. From there, you can either take a taxi or walk towards the hotel. If you are already on Hong Kong Island, the fastest way to get to the hotel is by taxi.

Summer Palace is located on the fifth floor of Island Shangri-La Hong Kong. From the hotel's lobby, just walk past the Lobby Lounge and take the escalator going down. Summer Palace is at your right side.
