Café Wu at Shangri-La Hotel Wuhan

Café Wu (香苑) is the all-day dining restaurant of Shangri-La Hotel Wuhan. It serves a la carte and buffet dining which features local and regional Chinese as well as international cuisines. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the hotel and has in-door and al fresco dining areas.

The restaurant has several food stations that feature a variety of cuisines. Highlight of Café Wu are the live cooking stations where the restaurant's well trained chefs prepare dishes a la minute, ensuring that guests enjoy freshly cooked dishes that are customized to their preference. Because of the popularity of the hotel to local Chinese as well as Japanese business travelers, Café Wu has an extensive selection of local and Japanese dishes. There is also a section dedicated to Western cuisine.

Café Wu is open daily and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant welcomes both checked-in and walk-in guests:

  • Breakfast Buffet (6:00am-10:00am Monday to Friday; 6:00am-10:30am Saturday & Sunday)
  • Lunch Buffet (11:30am-2:00pm Monday to Thursday; 12:00nn-2:30pm Friday to Sunday)
  • Dinner Buffet (5:30pm-10:00pm daily)
  • a la Carte Dining (6:00am to 10:00pm daily)

Guests staying at Shangri-La Hotel Wuhan enjoy their complimentary buffet breakfast at Café Wu. This includes guests who booked a room package inclusive of breakfast, as well as Golden Circle Jade members who enjoy complimentary breakfast as part of their member benefits.

In-house guests staying in a Horizon Club Room or a Suite, as well as Golden Circle Diamond members staying at the hotel, also have the option to enjoy the buffet breakfast at the restaurant.

Food stations include Breads & Pastries, Cereals Station, Fresh Garden Salads & Fruits, Japanese Station, Chinese Station, Western Station and Desserts Station. There are also three live cooking stations where guests can order eggs cooked to their preference (sunny side, scrambled, boiled as well as omelette) as well as noodle soup dishes.

The third live cooking station is dedicated to Wuhan's traditional breakfast dish, the Reganmian (热干面) roughly translated in English as hot dry noodles. Reganmian is said to be the most popular breakfast dish in Wuhan, making it one of the must-try dishes at Cafe Wu.

Drinks are also included in the breakfast buffet. Guests can choose from freshly brewed coffee (Americano, Latte, Mocha and Cappuccino), Zesta tea (English Breakfast, Jasmine, Black Tea with Osmanthus, Earl Gray, Chamomile etc), hot soy milk as well as a variety of chilled fruit juices.

During my stay at Shangri-La Hotel Wuhan, I had one of my breakfasts at Cafe Wu. As always, when I am traveling, I always try out the local dishes of the destination. In this case, I stayed away from Western dishes and focused on local and regional Chinese dishes offered in the buffet.

My first plate included dishes from the Asian (mainly Chinese) station. I had Wuhan Fried Rice, which I find a more savory version of the Yangzhou Fried Rice. I also got some vegetable dishes, roasted chicken with hints of five spice. I also had a steamed red bean bun.

As mentioned earlier, Reganmian (热干面) is one of the must-try dishes for breakfast at Cafe Wu. This noodle dish is served with a thick sauce consisting of soy sauce and sesame paste. It is then topped with pickled vegetables, chopped green onion and chili oil. Mixing the dish thoroughly will make the noodles evenly coated by the sumptuous sesame paste sauce.

Two other Wuhan delicacies you must try are the Doupi (豆皮), a fried sticky rice dish layered with bean skin, chopped mushroom, pork and green onion; and the Mianwo (面窝), a fried doughnut-shaped snack made of flour, soy milk, rice milk, sesame and chopped green onions.

Finally, I ended my breakfast with a platter of fresh fruits consisting of oranges, cubed watermellon and honeydew which I paired with a glass of chilled orange juice.
