The Loft at Waldorf Astoria Bangkok

The Loft at Waldorf Astoria Bangkok

The Loft is the New York-inspired bar of the newly opened Waldorf Astoria Bangkok. The bar's Art Nouveau design evokes the glitz and glamour of New York, coupled with touches Thai elegance and graciousness. Located on the 56th floor, The Loft is also one of the best spots in Bangkok for sundowner cocktails.

What I like about The Loft is that you don't only get an unobstructed view of the city, you also enjoy top quality cocktails. Cocktails here are based on The Old Waldorf Astoria Bar Book which Italian bartender, Michele Montauti, creatively reinterpreted using local Thai flavors and garnishings.

Take for example the classic Waldorf which was mixed with chocolate bitters, cardamom maple and topped with Thai basil. It still has the woody taste, but with the aromatic hints of cardamom and Thai basil. My preferred drinks remain to be the sours because I want my cocktails to be light to the taste, but with a strong kick of alcohol.

The Mamie Taylor (left) visually reminded me of my favorite frothy whiskey sour, but this one has additional aroma coming from the nutmeg tincture and ginger ale. The Floradora (right) is another classic cocktail mixed with ginger ale, and here at The Loft, they use Iron Ball Gin of Thailand in making this drink.

Being one of the newest bars in Bangkok, The Loft still has a lot to prove, but I already see its great potential to become one of the best bars in Bangkok, if not in the whole of Asia. I will surely be back to try other cocktails from the menu, and of course, enjoy the panoramic view of Bangkok.
